Community Engagement

As an educator, community engagement is central to my teaching philosophy and practice. I believe that fostering strong connections between schools, families, and local organisations enriches learning and creates meaningful opportunities for students. By involving the community in educational initiatives, I aim to develop a sense of belonging, cultural awareness, and shared responsibility among students and their families.

A key way I achieve this is through the strategic use of Facebook to enhance communication and engagement with the school community. Social media provides an accessible platform to celebrate achievements, share updates, and invite collaboration. For example, I created a Facebook post interviewing students about what they love about their principals. This initiative not only showcased the supportive and nurturing relationships within the school but allowed the broader community to see the values that underpin the learning environment. Posts like these humanise the school experience and strengthen bonds between students, staff, and families.

I also use Facebook to encourage family participation in school events and activities. By sharing inviting and vibrant posts about open days, workshops, and community celebrations, I ensure families feel welcomed and informed. Visuals such as photos and videos capture the energy and inclusiveness of school life, sparking excitement and encouraging greater involvement.

In my role as a specialist teacher, I further engage the community by collaborating with local resources and organisations to enrich curriculum delivery. For example, I have organised events like Auslan workshops in partnership with local Deaf organisations, providing students with authentic learning experiences that deepen their skills and cultural understanding. Additionally, I ensure families are actively involved in their children’s learning journey through consistent communication, interactive events, and celebrations of student progress.

I am passionate about creating engaging assembly items that celebrate inclusion and diversity. I have facilitated the production of signed Auslan songs and videos, working with students to perform alongside well-known books and stories. These projects not only enhance students’ confidence in using Auslan but also foster a deeper appreciation of Deaf culture within the school community. By incorporating signing into assemblies, I aim to create meaningful and memorable experiences that unite students, staff, and families while promoting accessibility and cultural awareness.

Ultimately, my approach to community engagement—whether through personal interactions, collaborative projects, or innovative use of social media—reflects my commitment to creating inclusive, dynamic, and supportive environments where students thrive both academically and socially.
